Born in Steelton, Pennsylvania, Mr. Ortenzio has resided in the mid-state for his entire life. He is a graduate of Catholic High of Harrisburg (currently Bishop McDevitt High School), West Chester University and the University of Pennsylvania's School of Physical Therapy. From 1956 to 1969, Mr. Ortenzio successfully operated his own private practice of physical therapy – R.A. Ortenzio Associates – in Harrisburg and Mechanicsburg.

Throughout his career, he has served on several boards, including those of PNC Bank, AMSCO International, Quorum Health Group, and National Surgery Centers, Inc. In 1996, he was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education by the former Governor of Pennsylvania Tom Ridge. Mr. Ortenzio and his wife, Nancy, have three sons and 12 grandchildren.
